Converting MP3 to MIDI files is possible using freeware found online. It is not possible to do using native Windows software. MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) files are music files that are used in professional music recording hardware and software. Converting an MP3 file to a MIDI file is not commonly done as MIDI files contain information regarding the notes of of different instruments and are not a normal basic recording like a WAV file.
Download and install MP3-to-MIDI conversion software. Digital Ear, Free Midi Converter 1.0 and Intelliscore Polyphonic WAV to MIDI Converter 8.0 all offer their software free. Once the install file has downloaded from the website, double click the file and follow the on-screen prompts to install the software. None of these software suites takes up a significant amount of hard-drive space. Intelliscore Polyphonic WAV to MIDI Converter 8.0 is the most comprehensive option.
Open the conversion software. Load the MP3 file by clicking browse icon for 'Source File,' navigate to the directory where the MP3 file is stored and double click on it.
Set the conversion options. The program will automatically detect that the file is in MP3 format. Other conversion options such as 'Bit Rate' can be customized, but the default options will be fine for most users.
Set the 'Output Directory.' Navigate to directory where the file will be output. Set a 'File Name.' Click 'Convert.' The file will now be converted. This process should not take more than five minutes. When the conversion is complete exit the program. Navigate to the directory where the new file was created and listen to it to make sure the conversion was successful
